Abstract:Empirical treatment of acne vulgaris is essential for reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. Currently, there are two treatment options that are commonly used in acne vulgaris patients. One is topical minocycline (Clomid) which is given orally in a topical formulation, and the other is oral doxycycline (Doxy) in an oral formulation. Both topical formulations are efficacious agents in the treatment of acne vulgaris and are available in the market today. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the topical minocycline, Doxy, and doxycycline in acne vulgaris treatment.
Introduction
Methods
This was a single-center, multicenter, open-label study that evaluated the efficacy of topical minocycline, Doxy, and doxycycline in the treatment of acne vulgaris. The study consisted of 12 patients with moderate to severe acne vulgaris. The patients were divided into 2 groups: a topical minocycline group (2 g twice daily, i.e., 50 mg/day) and a oral doxycycline group (2 g twice daily, i.e., 200 mg/day). The clinical severity of acne vulgaris was assessed using the International Index of the Assessment of Clinical Ductulation System (IIADS), the Clinical Global Impression of Change (CGI-C), and the Acne Severity Index (ASI-14).
The inclusion criteria were as follows:
Study Design
This study was a single-center, open-label study conducted in the Clinical Institute of the Academic Health Center of the School of Pharmacy in the National University of Singapore. A total of 12 patients with moderate to severe acne vulgaris were enrolled. All patients had moderate to severe acne vulgaris with moderate to severe acne associated dermatitis. In this study, the clinical severity of acne was assessed using the IIADS and the CGI-C. All the patients were given the IIADS. Patients who experienced an increase of skin color, itching, or rash after the administration of the oral minocycline, Doxy, or doxycycline were also included. The patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: topical minocycline and oral doxycycline. The topical minocycline was administered orally in a topical formulation, while the oral doxycycline was administered in an oral formulation. Both topical formulations were administered orally in a topical formulation (5% minocycline in water, 0.2% doxycycline in 1% minocycline in 2% minocycline in 5% minocycline in 10% minocycline in 10% minocycline in 100 mg) while the oral doxycycline was administered in an oral formulation (0.2% doxycycline in water, 0.2% doxycycline in 1% minocycline in 5% minocycline in 10% minocycline in 100 mg). The clinical efficacy of the topical minocycline, Doxy, and doxycycline was evaluated according to the IIADS, CGI-C, and the ASI-14.
While the potential for toxicity is significant, Doxycycline should be used cautiously. If the medication causes an adverse effect, it is advisable to stop the medication. However, in the rare event that the patient is experiencing a severe reaction, the patient should consult a doctor immediately. In this article, we will discuss the potential risks and benefits of using Doxycycline, including its role in treating certain infections.
